Stop the Bloody Lies

Let me preface this article by saying, shoe stores that carry size 41 have size charts on their websites. For instance, Aldo Shoes sizing chart reports a size 41 is equivalent to a size 10 and 42.5 is an 11. Size 41s are actually a size 10ish.

All I ask is when I visit these stores the sales associate should be well-versed in sizing (European and Italian) to better assist their customers. Extended-size feet gals know that size 41 is not a 'real' size 11. It is incredibly frustrating to go into shoe stores that carry size 41 and market it as an 11.  I cannot tell you how many times I have been confused by the sizing chart.

The sizing truth of the matter is, it all depends on where the shoes are manufactured. Shoes that are produced in China run smaller because of Chinese culture and tradition (i.e. foot binding). Unless otherwise specified for the sake of athletic shoes, they run a tad bit smaller. Shoes from Europe run more narrow than other regions. American made shoes run bigger.

Spotlight Designer for April 2015: Alejandra G.

Alejandra G.'s shoes are a dream come true. No, like literally. According to an interview Alejandra did with Amour Genesis Blog she dreamed up her shoe designs which later materialized. Alejandra G. affinity for fashion haunted her nightly slumbers only to bring forth her sole. Shoes, that is. Dreams do come true. Ok, I'm done with the trite use of clichès.

Alejandra's shoes are an intermix of animal print caged booties, multi-colored tassels, geometric prints and futuristic cut-outs. Of course, you're a nobody until somebody loves you, so celebrities such as Carrie Underwood, Tyra Banks and Karrueche Tran have donned her shoes.

Did I also mention that she carries size 11s in a few of her shoe designs? True size 11s, not 41s. Her shoes range from $260 and up depending on the detail and trend.

The Stepsister to Cinderella Syndrome...We're Cursed.

The question is, how do women feel about this increase in size of their feet? Many loathe the thought of going shoe-shopping, held back by the embarrassment of buying large, masculine-looking shoes. Stores often fail to stock shoes at the upper end of the curve, reports Divine Caroline. Women subsequently buy smaller shoe sizes out of embarrassment, which can result in foot pain and injuries.---Time Magazine

This is similar to Christian Louboutins today---the modern glass slipper. There are plenty of envious women with larger feet that dream of wearing red-bottom shoes. But due to limited size availability, and an insufficient supply of 42s and 43s, we must watch the 'Cinderellas' of our lives win by a small foot.

We were doomed from birth. In Cinderella, stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine have big feet. And how these little darlings portrayed?
  1. Unsightly
  2. Boisterous and deafening
  3. Overpowering and tyrannical
  4. Envious
I don't know about you, but after watching Cinderella as a little one I never wanted large feet. This would mean that I would be just like the evil stepsisters. Most importantly, If I had large feet, then I wouldn't get my Prince Charming. The theory can seriously screw up a young girl enrolling her into a life of shame and insecurity. But, I digress.

Our perception is our reality.

"Big feet on a woman equals ugly, clumsy, unattractive," writer Ofelia Faz-Garza said. "I’m perpetually one of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters, squeezing my toes into shoes not meant for me. My feet feel like a defect, something to joke about. "
To make this long awaited Cinderella premiere even more excitable shoe designers Charlotte Olympia, Jimmy Choo and Salvatore Ferragamo have made their own renditions of the coveted glass slipper. Check out my article here.

As much as I dislike the idea of extended-size shoe discrimination, I will certainly be in attendance for Cinderella. Well, someone has to tune in for such shenanigans. The Cinderella Movie is to premiere March 13, 2015.

"The hot topic is how to serve women with the biggest feet," said Stephanie Stratton, a manufacturer's representative for several European shoe lines. "There are too many [of these women] for it to be considered strictly a niche. For the first time, two of our manufacturers have gone from a top European size of 42 to 45. That's from an 11-12 to a 13-14."---Star Tribune

The Glass Slipper

I want one. *Crosses arms forcibly and pouts with protruding lower lip* Shoe designers have mocked up a modern-day Cinderella glass-slipper for it's modern-day Cinderella. Check out the glamorous gleaming slippers below.

I'd have to say my favorites are the Charlotte Olympia(first shoe on the left bottom step) and Jimmy Choo (third shoe from the left on the top step). Below I have included the original sketch and shoe. Which one do you like? Or shall I say, which shoe fits you?

I've been on the quest for my Cinderella moment, so I reached out to a few of the shoe houses and to my surprise they replied to my inquiry. Jimmy Choo and Charlotte Olympia responded. Jimmy Choo did not tell me whether or not the shoe comes in a size 42 or 43, but they did inform me of the cost $4,595 and they would be available in September with a presale deadline of April 20th. While Charlotte Olympia's If The Shoe Fits! goes for $1,895 but maxes out at a 39.5. *womp womp* The verdict is still out on the other designers. I'll be sure to update you with the latest once I get a response.

Oh and I can't forget Charlotte Olympia...

Shoecabulary: Clogs

Clog: The Oxford English Dictionary defines a clog as a "thick piece of wood", and later as a "wooden soled overshoe" and a "shoe with a thick wooden sole". Clogs are found in three main varieties: wooden upper, wooden soled and overshoes (see illustrations on the right for typical forms).

It took me some time to adjust to to the chunkiness of a clog, but they're comfortable, can be worn with your outfits from day to dinner and even out dancing. Clogs might be a girl's best friend after diamonds. I'm pushing it. Clogs are in a category all their own and since New York is warming up you might find me trotting in these around the city.

 A few clog brands make sizes 10s, 11s and a few 12s.

Try Dansko for your size.
